THE Diva Run 2015, which is exclusively for women, promises to be an exciting event with three different segments and featuring a Kiddies Entertainment Area.

The Local Organising Committee, operating under the auspices of Eastern Province Athletics, is a formation of two experienced clubs, namely Nedbank RC and PEAAC.

The Diva Run, which takes place on August 10, is part of the Legacy Project, which has been widely promoted since early this year, and links a number of road races in the name of Nelson Mandela.

Starting with the main 10km race at 8:30am, the prize money will be attracting runners from all over the country. The first prize is R10 000, going right down to 10th place for the open female category. If any woman manages to break the SA Record of 31:13 she will add R50 000 to her prize money. If the world record of 30:21 is broken a massive R100 000 will be awarded to the winner.

Walkers will also feature in the 10km with first, second and third prizes of R1 000, R750 and R500 respectively.

Then there is the 5km Fun Run/Walk which carries the proviso that the winner must be under 19 years of age to qualify for the R1 000 voucher. For those who feel that a 10km is just a bit too far, this would be a perfect run. Youngsters taking part in the 5km must be at least 9 years or older on race day.

Finally there is the 2km Kiddies Run for under 9’s. This is the first time any running club has staged a race for this age category. Your children could be making history! And with a little quirk of fun, boys under 9 will also be welcome to join in on this special occasion to run with their sister. First prize for girls and boys is a R500 voucher.

Although all the necessary safety measures for these little ones have been put in place, including marshals every hundred metres, mothers are encouraged to run with their children, even with little brother or sister in a pram. These events have been thoughtfully put together by the two clubs so that moms can run with the children at 7:30am, drop the children off in the secure Kiddies Entertainment Area and be in time for the 5km at 8am.

The first 250 children to enter the Entertainment Area will receive a lucky packet.

The venue for this inaugural event is the NMMU Campus located on 2nd Avenue, Summerstrand, with ample parking across the road (2nd Avenue) on the NMMU cricket grounds, access from Erasmus Drive. Car guards will be appointed to watch vehicles.

There will be t-shirts for the first 1000 entries, regardless of distance or age categories, as well as gold medals to all finishers – including the 2km kiddies run.

The prize giving and lucky draw will be at 10:15am. Entry forms are available at all the primary sports shops.

For online entries go to www.whereinpe.co.za. Entries close on Friday, August 7. Pre-race registration and collection of race numbers will take place in the marquee from 4pm to 6pm on Sunday, August 9, as well as between 5:30am and 8am on race day.
