FOR this week’s Express on Wheels I had the pleasure of spending a week with a bright yellow Sport version of the new Opel Corsa, and if it wasn’t the fun ride that caught my imagination, it sure was the colour.

While I never thought a yellow car would ever be my cup of tea, I certainly warmed up to it very quickly, and it certainly is a head-turner.

The Sport, which was launched in August, is the top of the range model of Opel’s brand-new 5th generation Corsa which was launched in SA in February. There are 5 models in this range.

This 5-door 110 kW hatchback is aimed at the enthusiastic driver and equipped with the latest engine from Opel’s ecoTEC family of small petrol engines.

The Sport is equipped with a 1.4 turbo-charged ecoTEC engine which propels the Corsa from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds, with a top speed of 204 km/h. The 1.4T Sport’s tested fuel consumption is 5.9 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle.

The Corsa Sport comes with a six-speed manual transmission with synchronised gears, including reverse, with short shift travel. It is a great car to take through the gears with easy gear selection and an eagerness to get to sixth gear.

The new Corsa’s ride and handling have been improved with a new chassis and steering systems. According to the people at Opel, a lower centre of gravity and changes to the suspension have been made to improve vehicle roll behaviour, steering response and understeer behaviour.

The Sport’s combination of a good and eager turbo-charge engine combined with excellent road behaviour and great comfort features as standard spec is sure to create a lot of interest – not only among fans of sporty vehicles but also those who see driving as fun rather that just getting from A to B.

From putting your foot on the pedal, it is a pleasure to drive. Its roadholding is very good and where Sport models are usually associated with a “sporty” bumpy ride, this was not the case with the Corsa, despite my pothole-ridden everyday route.

The car is swift-footed, yet driving it one always felt safe and in control – both on the open road and in city traffic. Even on steep inclines the engine performed well and didn’t force you to gear down all the time.

Those who do not like yellow have 14 other colours to choose from. The Corsa Sport has a few subtle differences from the other models in the range to add to its sporty look – front and rear bumper extensions, side rocker mouldings, sporty exhaust tip, and carbon look outside rear view mirror covers. The big 17 inch “ Dark Titanium” alloy wheels add to the sporty look and I liked the two-tone wheel rims of the test vehicle that reminds me of flower petals.

The flowing lines of the dashboard give the Corsa a quality feel. Its sporty nature was emphasized by a leather-covered flat bottom sport steering wheel with silver trim, metal sports pedals and a big, nice-to-grip leather gear shift knob.

Opel’s Intellilink infotainment system comes standard in the Sport, offering an easy to operate 7-inch touchscreen and connection to smartphones. Sound is operated via Bluetooth and a USB port.

Standard specs

The Opel Corsa Sport has a 5-Star NCAP safety rating.

The comprehensive list of safety features found standard in the Corsa Sport includes six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. Traction Control (TC) is standard in the Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The primary goal of Traction Control is to prevent wheel slip from spinning during acceleration. Straight line Stability (SLS) and Brake Assist System (BAS), is a braking technology that increases braking pressure in an emergency situation.

The Corsa Sport boasts an impressive list of high-spec features as standard, such as auto lights and wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror, bi-Xenon lights with cornering light control, electric windows and mirrors, the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone navigation and app integration, air-conditioning, reverse camera with rear park assist and cruise control.
