Get ready for Africa’s largest family beach event

REGISTRATION for the 11th season of the popular aQuellé Ocean Racing Series are open ahead of the Series start on Sunday, October 11 at Hobie Beach.

This family based Series which is unique to Nelson Mandela Bay consists of 6 simultaneously running events on mostly alternate Sunday mornings throughout Summer and is appealing to the most social of participants just wanting to get or keep active this summer.

For the open water swimmers, triathletes and iron man contenders the Series has a 1km, 2km and 3km ocean swim this season whilst for those that prefer staying dry there is the 5km Beach Run and 5km Beach Walk and for the children 12 years and under there is a 1km Beach Run with no minimum age limit.

All events take place at the same time with a kids’ prize giving at 10am and the adult prize giving shortly thereafter with category winners’ medals and loads of lucky draw prizes up for grabs each race day including R1 000 cash.

Series membership for the season is required at a once-off R50 whilst race day entry fees for the swim events remain at R60, for the beach events are R40 and for the kids run it’s just R30. Ahead of the Series start next month, a R150 registration special is offered which includes series membership, a draw-string bag, t-shirt, silicone swim cap/running cap and some sponsors goodies. A Registration function will be held on Friday, October 11, between 5.30pm and 8pm at News Cafe Boardwalk where participants can collect their registration packs and also stand a chance of winning some lucky draw prizes including a top of the range Speedo wetsuit.

Urban Festival at Donkin

The balcony of the city – the Donkin Reserve - is the place to be this weekend to witness the Urban Run festival of events. The fun kicks off at 8am with the Metrogym hosting an outdoor aerobics class on the grass beneath the massive South African flag.

Everyone is welcome to come and join in this fun class. The collection of registration packs for the MBDA hosted Urban Run event starts from 9am whilst Redbull extremist Brian Capper will be performing his motorbike tricks at 10:15am and again at 12:45pm.

The SPAR Rotary Kids Zone will be available from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 7am to 2pm on Sunday with a variety of inflatable toys and face painting to keep the kids entertained all day. This area will be supervised by the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise and a daily entry fee of just R30 is being charged. Local reggae punk band Drywater will be performing on both the Saturday and Sunday whilst Centrestage’s Gino Fabbri will provide the entertainment from 8am on Sunday morning through to the prize giving at 12 noon.

The kids 2.5km urban run race starts at 12 noon on Saturday ahead of the 3pm start of the Inner City Enduro whilst the adults urban run starts at 9am on Sunday morning from the Donkin Reserve. The Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise will also be hosting the Castle Lite Beer Garden throughout the weekend. See for further information
