Jones, Snyman continue to dominate

2015-10-14 06:00

EIGHTEEN-year-old Wayne Jones and 14-year-old Megan Snyman continued their domination at the aQuellé Ocean Racing SeriesTM last weekend with resounding wins in the 2km Ocean Swim and 5km Beach Run respectively.

Season 11 of the Series got underway at Hobie Beach with just under 500 entrants from around the country.

Sunday’s moderate Westerly wind made swimming conditions ideal for those that took part in the 3km, 1km and 2km Ocean Swim events whilst the 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk and Kids 1km Beach Run were under way between Hobie and Pollok Beaches.

A highlight for this season is the support which the Zsports Masakhane Future Stars Development Trust programme has received from Pagdens Attorneys, Powertech Batteries and Caltex Eastern Cape which will ensure that just over 100 historically disadvantaged youngsters are given the opportunity to take part in the Series.

One of the greatest challenges facing the Series will be the new Metro levy of R1 900 for beach hire per morning despite the Series being unique to the city and being one of the few events which try to promote the city as the Water Sports capital of South Africa.

At Friday night’s registration function at News Café Boardwalk, Mary-Anne Stott won the R3000 wetsuit voucher from Speedo. Julie Venter won the Hlosi Game Lodge voucher from Lion Roars.

The victors on Sunday morning in the various events were: 1km Ocean Swim Ian Venter (12:56) and Kirsten Marriott (14:32); 2km Ocean Swim Daniel Jones (25:58) and Antonelle Saporta (31:15); 3km Ocean Swim Dylan Smith (38:25) and Tracy Gous (43:38); 5km Beach Run Wayne Mitchell (17:04) and Megan Snyman (19:05); 5km Beach Walk Juan Slabbert (31:24) and Maritza Craig (32:52).

In the increasingly popular Kids 1km Beach Run for children under the age of 12 the winners were: 6 years and under: Aiden Joubert (5:47) and Isabel Beattie (7:19); 7 to 8 years: Jayson Archibald (3:46) and Emma Hofmeyr (6:17); 9 to 10 years: 1 Jeandre Hattingh (4:08) and Zanri Black (3:43); 11 to 12 years: Connor Roff (3:37) and Chelsey Cooke (3:25);

The Rotary Club of PE were also presented with a donation of R1 100 from the Series on Sunday.

The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series takes place on alternate Sunday mornings with Round 2 taking place on Sunday, October 25. See www.oceanracingseries.com
