“ONS is oud, maar beslis nie koud nie –julle jonges kan ’n ding of twee by óns leer!”

Die Baai se goue oues praat nie net sommer wanneer hulle dit sê nie, want volgende week verteenwoordig hulle die metro in die provinsiale ronde van die Golden Games (slegs vir atlete bo 60) wat in Alice gehou word.

Die groep van 17 topfiks bejaardes uit verskeie dele uit die metro het gister omtrent gebokspring toe hulle hoor hulle het die provinsiale span gehaal.

“Daar gaan ons in jukskei, die 100 m-, 200 m-naelloop en 800 m deelneem,” het Gerrit Bonthuys (62) verlede week opgewonde gesê.

“Daar’s ook aflos en balspeletjies wat altyd baie pret is. As ons goed doen in Alice, sal ons moontlik later vanjaar in die nasionale spele meeding.”

Bonthuys meen al wat ’n mens nodig het om op jou oudag nog só rond te kan hardloop, is om ’n bok vir sports te wees.

Tryphina Mxadi (74) is juis só iemand.

Mxadi, die span se kaalvoet-atleet, sal die metro in die 100 m vir vroue oor 70 verteenwoordig. “Ek hardloop omdat dit my aktief hou,” het sy gister aan Die Burger gesê. “Om aan die gang te bly, is al manier hoe mens nie vinnig oud word nie.”

Mxadi en die res van die span het op 30 Junie vertrekna Alice, waar hulle op 1 en 2 Julie aan die Golden Games sal deelneem
