HIER in Helenvale is klawerjas iets wat die mense diep laat konsentreer, nié ’n woord in ’n gedig of ’n popgroep se naam nie.

Al van 2008 hou klawerjas dié spannetjie – die jongste is 13 jaar oud en die oudste 70 – op die punte van hul vingers.

“Klawerjas is ’n baie interessante tog ingewikkelde spel,” vertel Willfred Fredericks, wie al ses jaar aan die Helenvale-klawerjas-klub behoort. Hy is nie bietjie trots op sy span nie. “Ons is die Port Elizabeth-ligakampioen en kwalifiseer dus om in November aan die Klawerjas “Champ of Champs”-kampioenskappe in Kaapstad te gaan deelneem.”

Die Helenvale-klawerjasklub het verlede jaar ook aan dieselfde kampioenskappe deelgeneem en daarin geslaag om tot die kwarteindronde deur te dring. “Die kompetisie is taai, die spelers se vlak van intelligensie is besonders as dit kom by dié spel,” vertel Fredericks.

Voortdurende deelname en blootstelling aan ander spelers is broodnodig om die spelvermoë te slyp, verduidelik Fredericks, maar ongelukkig verg dit baie geld.

“Die rit na Kaapstad vroeg in November sal die klub niks minder nie as R22 000 kos. Gelukkig vir ons help raadslid Nico du Plessis waar hy kan.”

Du Plessis het hierop verduidelik hy belê graag sy spesiale ­munisipale toelae in positiewe dinge in die gemeenskap.
