THE new mayoral committee which was introduced by Mayor Danny Jordaan in a council meeting at the Woolboard buildings last week has received approval by opposition parties.

Jordaan introduced a new mayoral committee with both old and new faces saying he was confident that the lack of communication between the community and council would be broken.

Jordaan said he wanted a committee which met and received complaints by the people and responded to those complaints with urgency.

The new mayoral committee includes Safety and Security – Fikile Desi; Youth, Sport and Culture – Andiswa Mama; Roads and Transport – Babalwa Lobishe; Corporate Services – Feziwe Sibeko; Public Health – Joy Seale; Infrastructure and Engineering – Andile Mfunda; Human Settlements – Nomvuselelo Tontsi; Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture – Zukile Jodwana and Budget and Treasury – Rory Riordan.

DA councillor Angelo Dashwood said this was the best team he had seen since 2011. Dashwood said he was particularly confident with the introduction of Riordan and Tontsi in their respective posts.

UDM councillor Mongameli Bobani congratulated the mayoral committee but said although this was the cream of the crop he doubted they would be able to implement sound decisions in the little time they have before the elections.

Among those ousted are former Budget and Treasury Chair Balu Naran, Corporate Services Chair Wandisile Jikeka, Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Chair Nomamerika Magopeni and Public Health Chair Patricia Ndlovu.

Jordaan said he had not purged anyone but rather wanted to get the right people to strengthen each portfolio.

Jordaan said the key principles for consideration of his Mayoral Committee were competence, non-racial, non-sexist, generational and geographic spread.

Jordaan said Riordan (who was also sworn in as councillor on the same day) had been a councillor 15 years ago with excellent knowledge and expertise in finance.
