SHAYNE Greene (17), a learner at Lawson Brown High School, can proudly say that he is one of the most talented male ballet dancers in the Bay.

Greene, who participated in the annual Dance Festival, that was held at the Savoy Theatre last week, managed to secure the title of Senior Boys Champion, for the second year in a row.

Together with the title of dance champion, Greene also took home two gold awards, the Jennifer Abrahams Bursary and the Cape Town Senior Scholarship.

His dance instructor, Debbie Ralph, from the Debbie Ralph Academy, said that she was extremely proud of all that Shayne has managed to accomplish.

“His passion and commitment to dance is something so unique, for which I can take no credit. He is the star.” Ralph, who has been in the dancing industry for over thirty years, has been at the helm of cultivating Greene’s talent for the past decade.

“He was not even in primary school yet when his grandmother came to me and said, ‘this child has a dance talent’.”

Grandmother Yvonne Spear did not know how on the money her predictions were when she approached Ralph about her grandson’s talent. Although money was sometimes too tight to mention, it never deterred Spear or Ralph from helping Shayne make his dream a reality. However, the bursary has allowed Shayne to increase his knowledge in ballet.

With the R3000 prize he won with the Jennifer Abrahams Bursary last year, Shayne was able to compete in the world-renowned Geneé International Ballet Competition that was held in Cape Town.

Although Shayne is looking forward to finishing school next year, his biggest goal for 2016 is to dance in the South African International Ballet Competition.

The talented dancer concluded by saying: “In the end it’s not the stage that matters. As long as I can dance, I am happy.”
