Stadium gets first PSL domestic cup final

2015-05-06 06:00

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will over the next two weekends host two important national soccer matches – the 2014/15 Nedbank Cup final, between Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as the final match of the Premier Soccer League between Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs.

“It is a stellar achievement for the city. This is the first time that a Premier Soccer League domestic cup final will be played at the stadium since its completion in 2009,” said Chantal Du Pisani, chief executive of Access Management, the stadium operator.

“It is important to acknowledge that the city would not have been able to secure one of the leading events on the national soccer calendar without a resident soccer team and the support of the municipality,” she said.

PSL chief executive Brand De Villiers said, “In the final we have two clubs that have displayed quality football from day one of this season’s tournament.

“We would like to congratulate Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns for reaching the final.”

The Nedbank Cup final will be played on Saturday, May 16, at 3pm.

The Nedbank Cup final will be preceded by the Chippa United vs Kaizer Chiefs this Saturday (9 May) at 3pm where Kaizer Chiefs will be handed the PSL Trophy.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesperson, Roland Williams, said in a statement the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium continues to be the best-utilised stadium in the country with international and national rugby, football and concerts being held at this world-class facility.

“Coupled with that, the city has always proven to be great hosts in ensuring that safety, security, logistical support, traffic control, crowd control, and the like are always properly provided to the participants, event organisers and fans.

“And, as has been proven a number of times, there are no better, more passionate fans than Nelson Mandela Bay’s fans, who sing, cheer, dance and liven up any football, cricket or rugby match that the Bay is fortunate enough to host,” the statement read.

“We are sending out a very strong message to all football- and sports-loving people of the Eastern Cape to fill the stadium to the rafters, so that we again prove to be worthy hosts, and so that we provide resounding encouragement to the PSL and other national sporting codes to include Nelson Mandela Bay as a regular host of top-class sporting action,” said Williams

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
