Big boost for MBDA’s urban charity race

2016-08-31 06:00

THE 2016 Urban Run Nelson Mandela Bay, hosted by the MBDA, has received a boost from Caltex Eastern Cape ahead of next weekend’s charity obstacle race through the Port Elizabeth historic CBD.

Caltex, who will be hosting one of the many obstacles along the route, will also be ensuring top class entertainment for all the participants with top local mentalist and magician Brenton Peel set to fascinate the children with his Mind of Magic Show starting at 2pm next Saturday ahead of the 3pm start to the Kids Urban Run.

With all proceeds from the Kids Urban Run going to the Reach for a Dream Foundation, the children will tackle a 2.5km Urban route which sees them attempt no fewer than 6 obstacles.

The Donkin Reserve will become the centre of attraction from early on the Saturday, September 10 as the local Metro Gym kicks off the festival at 9am with a 1-hour outdoor aerobics class for anyone wanting to join in.

Pre-registration and collection of the charity goody bags opens from 9am to 2pm whilst the Sardinia Bay K9 Academy will showcase their dogs’ skills at 11am.

The Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise hosts the popular Rotary Kids Zone throughout the festival with just a R30 per day donation to leave your children to play.

The Urban Kids best dressed competition starts at 2:30pm whilst their prize giving will take place at 3:45pm with Brendon Peel and festival MC Gareth Burley. The inugral Urban Run MTB race through the city, managed by Mountain Events, starts at 4:15pm with an exciting 12km obstacle race through the CBD and surrounds. Local talented musician Joe van der Linde will finish off the day ahead of the MTB prize giving.

Sunday’s Urban Run, raising funds for Cleary Estate Cheshire Homes, will start at 8am with comedian Gino Fabbri warming up the participants with a best dressed competition at 8:30am and the call to start at 8:45am.

The spectacular start of the Urban Run with Gino entertaining the participants in a manlift, is well worth witnessing as the runners start in 6 separate batches.

The adult route, for participants 14 years and older, will take the runners through a village, a hotel, a harbour, a graveyard, a ruin, a haunted theatre, an olden days market place, a historic fort, a hotel and two breweries. Definitely not something to be missed this year and easily achievable for the most social fun runners.

Tackle the City for charity with all participants required to raise R100 or more for charity and being rewarded with awesome charity goody bags in 4 different batches.

The Altruists, the top batch of philanthropists who raise R500 or more, will receive the biggest goody bag and entry into the Tavcor Auto Sales (TAS) Altruist VIP Zone which offers pampering, free snacks and drinks and the opportunity to get free treatment from staff from the SA Physiotherapy Society.

The TAS VIP Zone will also offer Altruists the chance to win an amazing lucky draw prize. The festival will conclude next Sunday with a performance from Gino and the prize giving ceremony starting from 11:30am with Joe van der Linde providing the music beforehand.

Some entry slots still remain for the three events starting at the Donkin, see www.UrbanRun.co.za for information and entry. No entries received on the day of the event. Contact Michelle on 041 484 7860 for further information.
