Catch SA’s elite runners on 30 July

2016-07-20 06:00

COME July 30, Nelson Mandela Bay will be boasting the presence of some of South Africa’s finest elite runners.

The SA Half-Marathon Cham- pionship competition will be hotly contested over what is arguably the fastest course in the country.

The event is proudly sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the City of Champions as partners of EPA on the Legacy Project.

The purse is massive, with the winners of the male and female category each walking away with R50 000, maintaining the title of the richest half marathon race in South Africa.

There are many other incentives as well, such as team prizes for the first male and female EPA runners crossing the finish line, as well as a prize for the school with the most bulk entries and electronic printing machines to the value of R25 000.

That is besides the other fabulous lucky draw prizes at prize giving. Runners must, however, be in attendance at the prize giving to qualify for the lucky draw.

Roads will be closed from 5:30am starting from Driftsands along Marine Drive through to the back gate of NMMU.

Athletes will gain access at the crossover at 8th Avenue and Beach Road.

Access to the parking area on the sea side of Beach Road will be closed at 6.45am and will remain closed until after the race.

The 21.1km Road Race starts at 7.15am, and the accompanying 5km Fun Run will start 15 minutes earlier.

The main event follows a two-lap circuit along Marine Drive and turnings at both Kings Beach and just past the Humewood Golf Club.

The start/finish line is at Pollok Beach in Summerstrand.

The prize giving will commence at 10.45am at the venue.

Whilst the closing date for pre-entries is Wednesday, July 27, registration and late entries will be held on July 29 from 2pm to 8pm and from 5am on race day at the Summerstrand Surf Life Saving Club.

T-shirts will be handed out to the first 1 000 entries in the 21.1km event, and to the first 500 in the 5km Fun Run.

Online entries may be made at www.whereinpe.co.za sports site, or entry forms may be collected from all the usual sports shops including Myburgh Sports at Sunridge Village.

There was an exciting finish last year, and yet another nail biting finish is expected this year.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) is hoping for a huge turn out from the members of the public to show encouragement and support.
