Chippa stand a good chance against Sundowns away

NELSON Mandela Bay Premiership League outfit Chippa United still stand a good chance of being in the finals of the lucrative MTN 8 Wafa Wafa Cup Competition with R8-million winner-takes-all prize-money.

The Chilli Boys drew 0-0 with league champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the two-leg semifinal at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It is the first time that Chippa United, who ended sixth on the log in the Absa Premiership and qualified for the Top 8, have proceeded to the semifinal in a cup competition.

Meeting amaSandawana for the second semis at home on Wednesday, September 21, chairman Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi’s boys will have to score at least one goal and then make sure that they do not concede.

The highly motivated troops of head coach Dan “Dance” Malesela did not give Sundowns any space to breathe in the fiercely contested first half.

They dominated the match proceedings with better ball control and nifty passes, only to fail to put the ball into the net.

A contained Sundowns, who were without the Brazilian Leonardo Castro, of the famous “CBD Trio” that includes the fast-paced Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly, were frustrated the whole match.

Top goal scorer Rhulani Manzini got a knock in the first half of the match and was replaced by Tshwarelo Bereng, who made little impact in the second stanza.

Captain Thamsanqa Sangweni, Buyani Sali and new revelation Thembinkosi Lorch were giving the visitors lots of problems, but lost the ball in the 18th area through tight defence by Siyanda Zwane, Wayne Arendse, Ricardo Nascimento and Tebogo Langerman, as well as Denis Onyango on goal.

“A 0-0 draw is fine. I am happy, but would have loved it if Chippa had won,” said South African Football Association (Safa) Eastern Cape secretary Isaac Klaas.

“A draw at home is OK, but that is provided that they score a goal away and make sure that they don’t concede.”

Klaas added that he was comfortable with the structure of Chippa United as a team and hoped that the chairman did not tamper with it by selling players. – NCEBA DLADLA
