Chippa United miss Diamond Topola against Golden Arrows

CHIPPA United’s bosses have been stunned by the way the Chilli Boys surrendered their unbeaten run against Golden Arrows in Durban at the weekend.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Premiership league football outfit lost 1-0 to Abafana besithende (Golden Arrows) at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday after playing an almost perfect game that could have seen them still without a loss in four games in the league this season.

Confident of a win after drubbing PSL newcomers Baroka FC 4-1, the Chilli Boys did, however, take something away from the defeat.

“Golden Arrows are currently on form just like us,” United chief operations officer Lukhanyo Mzizi said. “However, we had them on the back foot for the greater part of the game in their back yard, but we could not score. One mistake at the back cost us the game and three points.”

Mzizi said head coach Dan “Dance” Malesela was working hard to sharpen the skills of their strikers to score goals because playing good football alone did not win matches.

He said they conceded, however, that they would someday face defeat like all other teams in the league, but had not thought Golden Arrows would be the first to beat them.

“We can also blame it on the absence of Diamond Topola (right back), who is carrying an injury after the Bafana Bafana match,” Mzinzi said, adding that Topola was, however, a hopeful starter for the Telkom Knockout Last 16 this Friday against Highlands Park at the Makhulong Stadium.
