FRIENDS and family are rallying behind a young boy they regard as a little hero, and are hosting a special fundraiser to assist with his medical expenses.

Alonzo Hoffman (8) suffers from a rare genetic disease called Chronic Granulomatous Disease, which affects about 1 out of every 200 000 people.

It is a defect in his immune system, causing his immune system to function at half the capacity as that of a normal child.

“Basically the agent in his body which fights off infections and bacteria, doesn’t function the way it is supposed to. This means he easily picks up infections and bacteria, therefore becoming very ill,” explained Alonzo’s mother Elveta.

In 2014 he was referred to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital where he was diagnosed with the disease. He now has to return to Cape Town for more tests.

“The only possible cure for his disease would be a bone marrow transplant, which we are planning on discussing with the doctors at Red Cross and hopefully they would agree in doing one for him,” Elveta said.

A special fundraiser in the form of a Golden Oldies dance, will be held to assist the family with all the expenses not covered by their medical aid.

The event is taking place at New Asia on Friday, July 1. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets are R30 and the dress code is denim.
