A SCRUMPTIOUS variety of meat, seafood and vegetable dishes await food explorers at The Boardwalk’s Bayside Pantry in April when the rich and exciting flavours of authentic Portuguese cuisine will feature on the buffet every Wednesday night.

Traditional Portuguese food tends to be hearty and oftentimes spicy, with a variety of textures featuring in stews, casseroles and grills.

“People often think peri-peri chicken when they think of Portuguese food but it is so much more than that. We have included an exciting array of Portuguese dishes, just as a Portuguese grandma would make, on the buffet to showcase just how diverse this cuisine really is,” said Nqobile Majozi, Marketing Manager at The Boardwalk.

To start, guests have a choice of soups such as kale and potato soup with chorizo (caldo verde) or salads such as chicken and quinoa salad; salada russa (tuna salad); Portuguese sardine and potato salad, and spicy corn, pepper and red kidney bean salad.

True to Portuguese tradition, there is also a selection of cold fish and meat dishes such as baccalou with chickpea and olives; spicy crispy chicken strips, and ox tongue with salsa Portuguesa.

Peri-Peri is dedicated a station of its own with favourites such as chicken liver peri-peri and peri peri fish stew with potatoes amongst the items to try.

A choice of grilled and roasted meats, Portuguese style, is available at the grill and carvery stations.

Perhaps the most exciting is the hot pot station where there are authentic stews, casseroles and vegetables to sample. Amongst these are cacoila Portuguese stewed beef; Portuguese barbequed pork; Portuguese pasta fazole; braised spinach and chick pea; green beans, sweet corn and chorizo, and Portuguese marinated carrots.

The feast is nicely rounded off with tempting puddings and treats such as molotof meringue with fresh fruit; poached pear and honeycomb parfait, and fillozes (Portuguese doughnuts) amongst others.

The Portuguese Buffet is available during April on Wednesdays between 6pm and 10pm. The cost is R149 per person.
