LES Barnes, who was sports editor of Die Oosterlig for 25 years and a former journalist with PE Express, will celebrate his 80th birthday on Tuesday, March 29.

Les and his wife Elizabeth, have three sons, Peter, David and Paul and seven grandchildren – six at Grey Junior and one at Collegiate Junior.

His sons are the owners of Sunridge Super Spar and the Despatch Super Spar.

Les has been associated with the Port Elizabeth athletics club and EP athletics since 1952. He was secretary of his club at the age of 18 and later became chairman – a position he held for many years. He has been the life president of the club for the past five years.

Les and his club were awarded national colours for administration which included the organisation of the former excellent Vernon Barnes Memorial meetings.

He is a former national cross-country selector and was appointed manager of the national cross-country team but had to withdraw because of the death of his brother.
