2017-09-06 06:01

THE Gelvandale 15km road race and 5km family run/walk will be held at the Gelvandale Stadium on Saturday, September 16 in an early celebration of Heritage Day.

Michael Mbambani of Eastern Province Athletics announced that a R10 000 incentive had been introduced for the top three schools with the most finishers (more than 20 entries) in the 5km family run.

The winning school will receive R5 000, with R3 000 and R2 000 awarded to the schools in the second and third positions.

The Gelvandale Race is proudly presented by Eastern Province Athletics in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and their Legacy Project.

Race organisers Gelvan Athletic Club and X-Cel Running Club confirmed that all 5km finishers will receive a medal.

T-shirts will be given to the first 200 entries and prize money and lucky draw prizes will also be awarded during the prizegiving.

Gold medals will also be awarded to the first five men and women, as well as the category winners. Silver medals will be awarded to the next 150 athletes, while bronze medals will be given to all the finishers within the cut-off time for the 15km race. The race includes two distances – the 5km which starts at 6:45am with a cut-off at 8am.

Both races start and finish at Gelvandale Stadium in Liebenberg Road.

Participants are encouraged to follow Standford Road until they reach the Gelvandale Stadium.

Parking will be accessible from Liebenberg Road and the field next to the swimming pool in Beetlestone Road.

The cost for the 15km run is R60; 15km runners aged between 60 and 69 will only pay 50% of the race fee, R30.

15km runners over the age of 70 will receive free entry.

The temporary license, required for the 15km only, is R30 and R20 for the 5km family run.

Entry forms are available from Brian Bands, The Footballer, Action Sports, Sportsworld, Sportsmans Warehouse in Port Elizabeth or Brocketts in Uitenhage or online at www.whereinpe.

Registration and late entries will take place at the Gelvandale Stadium Club from 5 to 7pm on Friday, September 15 and from 5am on the day of the race.
