GREY High School recently hosted the Centenary Hirsch Shield, the oldest schools’ athletics event in South Africa.

Many former Hirsch Shield greats were in attendance to celebrate the occasion and to reminisce over former meetings.

To make for an even greater event, Grey won the Hirsch Shield for the first time since 1999, narrowly defeating St Andrew’s College and Queen’s College in a closely contested event.

A total of 16 schools participated in the event. Queen’s has been the winner of the event for the past 15 years.

The Grey stand-out athletes, who won gold medals in the u/19 section on the day, were Dylan Finlay for the 1 500m and 3 000m, Gerrick Rautenbach for shot put and discus, Waqar Solaan for long jump and Bulumko Ntuthu for long jump.

Grey High also won the u/14 section, the Sammy Gunn Shield, with Kingswood as the runners-up. Framesby won the SF Edwards, the u/16 section, narrowly defeating Selborne and Hangklip.
