LION City left-winger, Andile Zane Gxekwa, scored an all-important goal for his side in their ABC Motsepe League clash against Walter Sisulu University (WSU) which was played at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday.

WSU’s players looked flatfooted in the entire first half with the home side applying more pressure. City’s midfielder, Zithulele Ala Mhlontlo, and right winger, Zukisani Benni Ngalo, had some good moves up their sleeves that confused the WSU defenders.

Following these good moves, Mhlontlo followed up with a good cross which was intended to be played by their striker, Ludwe Sonjica, who skipped the ball, which resulted in a goal that was scored by Gxekwa in the fifteenth minute.

City diminutive fullback Aviwe Nkuza Baartman beat two WSU players and he made a good pass to Ngalo whose efforts went over the cross bar with the visiting goalkeeper, Andile Matolengwe, being beaten.

In the second half the home side was kept in their territory by the students.

WSU super substitutes, Xolela Bonxa, Azola Ngodwana and Mkhuseli Mfeketho, changed the complexion of the game. Bonxa was nearly rewarded with the goal in the seventieth minute, but the City goalkeeper Ntembeko Mbombota parried his shot over the goals.

The inclusion of Freedom Funani gave a sigh of relief to the hosts. In the eighty-fifth minute Ngalo beat the two defenders, Anele Ginya and Freddie Hlalele, in the box but Matolengwe was quick to collect the ball.

Skippers Thozamile Magwala, Baartman, Onesimo Maxengwana, Siyanda Petse, Lelethu Mfo and Mbombota kept things tight at the last line of defence.
