Jam-packed programme for Youth Month

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has organised a bumper to bumper programme, not only to celebrate Youth Month, but also to pave a way forward in the empowerment and development of young people across the city.

Youth Day Celebrations, June 16

To commemorate the Soweto Uprising in the context of the 40th Anniversary:

1. 10km marathon

2. Bands and Majorettes Parade (Hobie Beach to NMMU South Campus)

3. Youth Day Celebrations at Gelvandale Stadium: All government departments and entities will bring their services that benefit young people. Skills development, internship and bursary opportunities will form part of the services that will be available on the day.

Business Summit, June 21

To provide a platform for the various government entities to present opportunities for business and funding to Youth and Youth Stakeholders Weekly Youth Cluster Dialogues, from June 22 to 24

Themes for the dialogues will be “Youth and the meaning of Freedom” with special reference to the following sub themes:

• Arts and Activism

• Economy

• Leadership

• Education

• Social Cohesion

• Sport

The dialogues will take place in all 6 clusters.

Music Festival and Poetry, June 25

Developmental platform for 40 local Artists to commemorate 40th Anniversary of Soweto Uprising Youth Celebration.

Mayoral Reception: Send-off, June 29

Send-off celebration for artists from the Nelson Mandela Bay that are taking works to Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

Youth Assembly and Siphiwo Mthimkhulu Memorial Lecture, June 30 Youth Assembly will serve as the conclusion of the Youth Month. The Assembly seeks to address youth-related issues, challenges and ideas that contribute to the development of young people in Nelson Mandela Bay.

A memorial lecture will commemorate the contribution of students as reflected in the story of liberation struggle icon, Siphiwo Mtimkhulu.
