ONCE the Department of Correctional Services’s investigation into violence at the St Albans prison has been completed, the minister will intervene to solve the problems.

This is what Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the national department, said about the investigation after a fight broke out between warders and prisoners in the prison on December 26.

Three prisoners were killed and 13 warders and many other prisoners were injured. A group of 33 inmates allegedly assaulted the warders with sharp objects in the dining hall, whereafter the warders defended themselves with batons.

The investigation into the attack continues, Nxumalo said last week. “The team is still at St Albans busy with the investigation,” said Nxumalo. “Once the initial investigation is completed, the minister will come here to see which measures should be introduced at this prison.”

Zach Modise, national commissioner of the department, said shortly after the attack that staff shortages and overcrowded cells are some of the problems that contributed to the violence.ODETTE PARFITT
