AN EXCITING night swimming event, the ‘Nightswimming:100 100’s for Ronel’ will take place at Pearson High School on Wednesday, June 15, to support the Reid family, as Christopher Reid is participating in the Rio Olympics.

The fund-raising initiative was first started by the Horton family on social media and has since spread throughout the Port Elizabeth community.

The aim of this school event is to raise funds for Ronel Reid to get to the Rio Olympics to support her son, Christopher. Hannah Reid (Christopher’s sister) attends Pearson High School which is why the school wants to show their support.

PE born Christopher Reid (20) is a former Grey High School pupil. He achieved his dream when he earned a berth in the national swimming team for the Rio Olympic Games. He recently smashed two records during the SA Championships and Olympic trials.

During the school’s night swimming event, teams of 10 members will swim 100 100s in a relay format in a time limit of 400 minutes.

The teams may have a theme and may wear anything they wish, from wetsuits to pajamas. There are prizes for the fastest team; fastest individual 1km and the most enthusiastic team on offer.

The water will be covered and heated for a few days prior to the event and should reach a temperature of approximately 21 degrees.

The relay starts at 5:20pm as they would like to have a midnight cut-off (400 minutes).

A tuck-shop, as well as some invited vendors, will be available for spectators.
