Old Sanlam building detainees sought

2016-09-07 06:00

EASTERN Cape Human Settlements MEC Helen Sauls-August has called on all people who were detained at the old Sanlam building, where freedom fighters were tortured by the State Security Branch during the apartheid regime, to come forward for recognition.

In April this year, tabling the policy and budget vote speech for the 2016/2017 financial year, Sauls-August announced plans to convert the notorious apartheid State Security Branch offices into a thriving social and rental housing project.

The building will be revamped by the Qhama Social Housing Institution, which will be responsible for the conversion of the building into a precinct with social housing, retail and heritage components.

The purpose of the call is to create a database of all the detainees so that they can be recognised and recorded in the revamped building.

In cases where the detainees died in the building or have since passed on, immediate families can come forward with their details before September 20.

Detainees or relatives of the detainees can contact Sauls-August’s constituency office on the 2nd Floor, Florence Matomela House, Govan Mbeki Avenue, to register their names.

They should ask for Nzwaki, who can also be contacted on 041 585 3915.

They can also contact Prudence Mini from the Department of Human Settlements on 043-711 9618 or e-mail: PrudenceM@ecdhs.gov.za
