ANDRÉ Ludik, a power lifter and coach from Port Elizabeth, honoured South Africa at the recent 2016 Summer Paralympic games that took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He represented South Africa as both a coach and manager in the Powerlifting Championships.

“The highlight of the games was when Chantell Stierman, the female power lifter I was training, came in sixth place in the under 61kg division,” said Ludik.

According to Ludik, the most difficult part of coaching is to overcome the distance problem since he hails from Port Elizabeth, while Stierman is from Kimberley. He travelled on a regular basis to her home town to coach the athlete to prepare for the Rio games.

In February he also represented South Africa as a coach and manager in the Rio Powerlifting World Cup and took part in the Classic World Bench Press Competition in May and came in fourth position. He was the SA coach of the above mentioned Championships.

Ludik is also an outstanding power lifter and is currently the top Master 2 Men power lifter and bench presser in South Africa. He is an Executive Board Member of Powerlifting on the Commonwealth panel.

In the last year alone, André can proudly list a number of achievements:

. He took part in the Eastern Cape Master Bench Press Championships where he achieved a gold medal and broke the Eastern Cape record

. Won the Eastern Cape Master Powerlifting Championships and broke three Eastern Cape records

. Eastern Cape Best Master and Senior Bench Presser for 2016

. Eastern Cape Best Master and Senior Power lifter for 2016

. Eastern Cape Best Coach for 2016

. Set and holds the current SA bench press record (177.5kg) since 2011

. Set and holds the current Eastern Cape bench press record (180kg) since 2011

. One of only four South African Internationally qualified referees.

André will take part in the SA Bench Press Championships in Gauteng on November 26.

“I will attempt to qualify for the April 2017 World Bench Press Championships in Killeen, Texas, as well as for the September Commonwealth Bench Press and Powerlifting in Potchefstroom.”
