OPEL has recently launched its new Mokka X range in South Africa, where the X in the name is the new global identifier for future Opel SUV and crossover vehicles.

There are four models with two specification levels in the range starting with the Enjoy and moving up to the higher spec Cosmo.

While both spec levels are available with manual and automatic transmissions, they are all powered by the same engine, the 103 kW 1.4 litre turbocharged ECOTEC petrol engine, which produces 103 kW between 4 900 and 6 000 rpm and 200 Nm between 1 850 and 4 900 rpm.

Enjoy spec levels:

For this week’s Express on Wheels the model test-driven was the lower spec Enjoy.

And even though it is a lower spec version, one will be pleasantly surprised with the specs that are offered in this model.

The Enjoy has 17 inch alloy wheels, while the Cosmo comes with 19 inch alloy wheels.

The Enjoy also boasts steering wheel audio controls, speed sensitive power steering and a leather steering wheel.

As far as the headlamps are concerned, it has fog lamps (front and rear), LED daytime running lamps and automatic headlight control. The Cosmo has extra the active high beam assist.

The Enjoy’s seats are clad in cloth, while this makes way for leather in the Cosmo.

Also impressive is the number of convenience features that is standard in the Enjoy, such as electronic climate control, cruise control, speed limiter control as well as electric, heated and foldable side mirrors. The convenience features with which the Cosmo is upgraded are rain sensor wipers, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, reverse camera and park assistance.

The Enjoy shares all the same safety and security features as the high spec model, which includes, among others, ESP, hill start assist, driver and passenger airbags, front seat side airbags and curtain airbags, as well as an anti-theft alarm and immobiliser.

As far as the infotainment system is concerned, the Enjoy model has a radio/CD frontloader with Bluetooth/USB/MP3/Aux input. The Cosmo specification gains the Intellilink Infotainment system.

Exterior:

The most significant exterior change in the Mokka X is the new headlight clusters, now with sports LED daytime running lights.

With its eye-catching scuff plates, roof rails and bulky front design, the Mokka X has an athletic and sporty yet stylish stance.

It’s high ground clearance will also make you feel more comfortable taking it off the beaten track.

Interior:

The dashboard has clean lines and an uncluttered look. The Intellilink Infotainment System with 7” screen, which is standard in the Cosmos model, is available as an option for the Enjoy model.

It boats a roomy, comfortable interior for those in the front and back. The boot, which is a very good size, offers the added convenience of a flat loadbed, which is flush with the lid opening, making it easy to load cargo.

The back seats folds flat in a 60/40 split.

Ride:

Zero to 100 km/h is reached in 9.8 seconds with a top speed of 196 km/h for the 6-speed manual models. For the two models equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission, the 0-100 km/h sprint is achieved in 10.7 seconds and they carry a top speed of 191 km/h.

The Mokka X test-driven was equipped with a manual transmission. It is a zippy vehicle and offered a comfortable ride in the urban commute, with enough oomph for confident overtaking on the open road. It offers a sturdy feel on the road coupled with easy handling.

Opel states that the average fuel economy on the new Mokka X 1.4T Enjoy manual is 5.9-litres per 100 km and 6.2 litres per 100km for the Mokka X 1.4T Enjoy automatic on the combined cycle.

For the Mokka X 1.4T Cosmo manual the fuel consumption is stated as 6.0-litres per 100 km, while the Mokka X 1.4T Cosmo automatic returns a combined cycle average figure of 6.5-litres per 100 km.

Warranty and pricing:

All new Opel Mokka X derivatives are backed by Opel Complete Care with a comprehensive five-year/120 000 km warranty and come with a five-year/90 000 km service plan linked to service intervals of 15 000 km.
