NELSON Mandela Bay members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) shone during the annual SAPS Service Excellence Awards held at the Regent Hotel in East London last Friday, November 11.

Sergeant S. Blunden and his partner, S. Msindwana both attached to the Port Elizabeth Flying Squad, were crowned overall winners of the SAPS Eastern Cape Service Excellence Awards.

SAPS spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said the SAPS Excellence Services Awards were held to honour and award exceptional services rendered by its diligent employees at each level during the 2015/2016 financial year.

“These awards are aimed at recognising and honouring the police officials, reservists and public service employees, as well as members of Community Police Forums that excelled and have rendered an exceptional service to the community,” said Tonjeni.

Explaining the process of nomination, Tonjeni said it was democratic in that it allowed any person, be it a manager, employee or a colleague, to elect an individual of their choice to be recognised and honoured for the outstanding performance of their duties.

“Employees also have the opportunity to nominate themselves in the different categories. These nominees are the type of people that show an exemplary dedication and commitment to their duties and contribute very positively to service delivery,” Tonjeni said, adding that ever since they were established, the awards had been a source of inspiration to the personnel within the service and stakeholders, especially for those individuals that were not ashamed to go the extra mile in delivering services to the public.

The awards are divided into the following categories and the winners are:

1. Administration employee of the year level 1-7 (Mt Ayliff SAPS): Cleaner Zula
