R10 000 lucky prize for river mile

2017-01-11 06:01

THE Spar Summer Festival, which incorporates Africa’s oldest open water swimming event, the SPAR River Mile, has announced a R10 000 cash lucky draw prize for one lucky Mile Swimmer when the event takes place on Sunday, February 26.

A festival of activities for the whole family just got a whole lot more interesting for all those who would like to swim the Mile race on the Sunday afternoon. Drawn by way of lucky draw, one finisher of the Men’s or Ladies’ Mile races who is present at the prize giving will walk away with R10 000 cash. Possibly one of the biggest cash lucky draw prizes in any of the sporting events in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The festival will take place over the weekend of February 25 and 26 at Cannonville on the Sundays River just 15 minutes outside of Port Elizabeth and will feature a host of festival activities including the massive Wimpy Rotary Kids Zone for children 12 years and under, the Castle Lite Beer

Garden and loads of entertainment for the whole family.

On the sporting front, the Saturday events will include the Wimpy 5km Family Fun Run, the Mountain Bike Races, the Double Mile swim, disabled Mile swim, the family half-mile swim and the ‘Anything that Floats’ where you’re able to bring all your inflatable beach and pool toys and tackle the half-mile down the river with the incoming tide.

On the Sunday, the water activities will include the Wakaberry Kids across the river races and the two feature Mile events. Finishers medals, hamper prizes and loads of cash and product lucky draw prizes are up for grabs across all the events.

See www.zsports.co.za for further information on the SPAR Summer Festival and also to register for one or more of the various sporting events on offer. The Anything that Floats event is free entry so just come on the day with your inflatable and jump in.

Great start to ocean series

The weather was fantastic for the start of the second half of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series which saw round 6 taking place at Hobie Beach on Sunday morning with over 500 participants entering for the events.

Africa’s largest family beach event enjoyed its best beach weather of the season with flat clear ocean conditions for the swimmers. Grobbie Grobler and Belinda Niemand won the 5km Beach Walk whilst Vuyiswa Mtimkulu and Tara Sacke won the 5km Beach Run.

The 400m swim was won by Connor Craig and Tiara Finnis, Cole Craig and Kirsten Marriott winning the 1km swim, Daniel Jones and Chane de Jager the 2km swim whilst Chris Mowbray and Amica De Jager won the 3km Ocean Swim.

The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series returns on Sunday, January 22, the day after the Eastern Province Triathlon Championships which will be taking place on Saturday 21st, with pre-registration at News Café, Boardwalk on Friday 20th between 5pm and 7pm. Three different distances are being offered for this Triathlon, the Youth, Sprint and Olympic Distance Triathlons.

All the swimming action returns to Marina Martinique this Sunday for the next round of the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics EC Swim Challenge Series which offers a 500m swim, 1km, 3km, 5km and 10km swims.

This weekend should see many of the Western Province swimmers in attendance as they battle to achieve SSA qualifying times with no sanctioned events taking place in their Province this season.
