In its heyday, Richmond Hill was home to affluent wool merchants from the 1820 Settlers. Now, thanks to the Mandela Bay development agency’s efforts to revitalise this neighbourhood, it is on track to becoming “the Sea Point of Port Elizabeth”.

“Richmond Hill is on track to become Port Elizabeth’s version of the Sea Point urban renewal success story,” said Ian Olivier, area principal of Pam Golding Properties in Port Elizabeth. “The upgrades at the Donkin reserve and the Athenaeum are at the heart of the sustainable economic growth here and in Central.”

The MBDA projects were also praised by the Richmond Hill special ratings area (SRA), which has been established in this suburb.

“It is fantastic to see the upgrades,” said Kevin Slattery, chairman of the SRA. “The Donkin reserve, the beachfront and the Old Tramways building all look great. The MBDA is clearly spending their money correctly.”

Without the MBDA, it would not have been possible to establish an SRA in Richmond Hill, Slattery added. “It was a long process, but the MBDA oversaw all of it and was an integral part of putting it in place.”

The SRA status means that residents pay a monthly fee of R54 to the municipality, which in turn is used exclusively to provide services to the neighbourhood. Residents have also rolled up their sleeves to contribute, through cleaning and running their own neighbourhood watch.

“These factors also have an impact,” said Sonja Tredoux, also from Pam Golding. “As a result, Richmond Hill has become an attractive choice for buyers.”
