HIS job is more than just a duty. He is not only a security guard, but also someone who cares for the community and who believes that, when a fellow citizen is in need and you have the ability to assist, you have to do what you can.

Siyabulela Teko, an ADT security guard from Algoa Park in Port Elizabeth, proved on Saturday 13 February, that he is prepared to go the extra mile to help someone in need, even if she is not a client of ADT Security.

Teko (31), who was on patrol duty in Walmer on this day, became a woman’s hero when he not only reunited her with her stolen cellphone after being mugged, but also managed to apprehend the suspect.

“I was busy patrolling a built-up area with lots of vegetation and bushes when I saw a commotion along the side of the road at about 7.30am.

“A large group of people had gathered and I knew that something must have happened, so I stopped and asked if I could help. I was told that a woman had just been mugged by a man armed with a kitchen knife barely a minute earlier,” Teko said.

The victim, who prefers that her name not be mentioned, gave Teko a description of the suspect and he immediately set off in search of the man.

“I saw a man close by that matched the description. It seemed that he was trying to evade arrest by running towards the nearby bushes but I used my patrol vehicle to block the suspect’s escape. He threw the phone to one side and also tried to hide the kitchen knife he had on him. It was at this point that the police were called to the scene,” Teko added.

According to Andrew Burdock, ADT’s District Manager of their outlying branches, the victim, who was on her way to work when the incident took place, is very grateful for Teko’s help. “I am proud of Armed Response Officer Teko’s swift action to offer assistance to this member of the public. We will apprehend any criminals and law-breakers swiftly and hand them over to the police to make sure the people of Port Elizabeth can go about their business without fear,” said Burdock.
