LION City goal poacher Ludwe Sonjica was on top of his game when he struck a brace against his former club Swartkops Valley United Brothers (SUBS) in their ABC Motsepe League clash that ended in 3-0 at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Friday.

City came up strong against their neighbours, but SUBS goalkeeper Moses Ndlela pulled a superb save after a goal scramble.

It was the SUBS’ turn to score their opening goal, but Xolelani Mkiva’s could not find the back of the net after City’s goalkeeper Lwando Nkohla was out of his goal line. City’s midfielder Luxolo Bibo Tobi unleashed a rocket, but SUBS Ndlela produced a world-class save.

The SUBS were awarded a free kick that was struck by Aviwe Venge straight into the hands of Nkohla. Axolile Kapo penetrated through the defenders of SUBS and delivered a pass that was intercepted by Bathandwa Zondani.

Tobi sent a cross from the right flank but Zondani miscued the ball and as a result Sonjica came up with City’s opening goal.

Before the end of the first half, Sonjica scored a spectacular goal that increased City’s lead to 2-0. The SUBS strikers could not penetrate between the solid defences of their opponents. However, the two sides went to the break with City dictating terms. City started where they left off.

City fullback Zithulele Allah Mhlontlo lobbed the ball over the advancing SUBS goalkeeper and he registered his side’s final goal. SUBS were awarded a penalty that was missed by skipper Thabiso Minana whose efforts struck the crossbar.

The game then ended 3-0 in favour of Lion City.
