The cubs festival of the Rygate Local Football Association (LFA) is no doubt an annual thriller and this year’s theme, “celebrating civersity”, was inspired by the spirit and scenes of the hundreds of soccer fans who were united during the four-day event focusing on the youth in communities.

About 100 clubs from all over the Western Cape participated at the Johnson Road sports complex in Rylands to compete for the various silverware.

The age categories u.6, u.8 and u.10 were introduced this year, after the event had catered for u.7s and u.9s the previous three years.

The tournament, now in its fourth year, fuses sport, fair play, culture and community service into a competition format that inspires community youth to embrace the skills they have acquired through Score’s sport and development programmes.

According to Faizel “Boeta” Samaai, president of Rygate LFA, it is a tournament for children to come and enjoy, to have fun and and take the opportunity to form friendships and share experiences with other young people who are motivated by social change.

“Secondly, the cubs event aims to increase sportsmanship as well as prevent discrimination in the game of soccer.”
