Mitchell’s Plain MCs Fleezy and MC Kay-B took home the Most Viewed Video award at this year’s Cape Flats Film Festival.

The video was for their track “Me and You”, which has been downloaded 11 000 times, after being play listed on English radio station Kiss FM.

Now Brolin Moffat (Fleezy) and Kurt Brown, as they’re known off stage, want to inspire other young artists to chase their dreams.

Brolin, who hails from Tafelsig, started out making music in his room until a friend put him in contact with DJ Angelo. “He was looking for young artists to record and give them a platform.”

After a quick audition using his phone for accompaniment, DJ Angelo agreed to help and the rest, as they say, is history.

Kurt, from Eastridge, has a similar story. He used to write his own lyrics and it was his cousin who encouraged him to record his first track. His first single “I’m the chosen one” recorded by DJ D-Boy, was released in 2012.

The two met each other on Facebook and soon started collaborating together. They work together on their tracks, writing the chorus first before elaborating in their verses.

Brolin says he takes his inspiration from guys like Nasir Jones and Tupac Shakur. “We can relate to the things they rap about because where we come from people rob each other and gangsterism is rife. They touched many people’s lives.”

Kurt on the other hand is a fan of Eminem. “He started from scratch. He didn’t have a rich family who could help him.”

Kurt says Eminems’ success encourages him to keep working on his own.

Their first joint project “Me and You” was released two years ago.

In the meantime, Brolin befriended Dutch artist Il Capo Supremo on Facebook and Twitter and eventually sent him his and Kurt’s music.

Il Capo liked what he heard so much that he offered to put the guys in contact with well-known American rapper Soulja Boy, who now helps the guys promote their original music internationally.

Brolin and Kurt are hoping to have an arsenal of original material soon, as they start work on an EP or album which they hope to release online in the near future. They are also working on tracks with Razor Da Kid, who Kurt met while in Johannesburg recently.

The two will also be releasing singles in the coming months and encourage music fans to keep an eye on their Facebook pages under “MCKAYB1992” and “YoungFleezy1991” to hear their new material.

Fans can catch Fleezy and MC Kay-B in action this weekend when the two perform at the Gemini Lounge in Landsdowne on Thursday 8 September from 20:00. Entry is free.
