Twenty people were left homeless and a puppy died in a fire that gutted eight wooden and iron structures in Maitland Garden Village on Wednesday last week.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage but it is alleged that it started at a wendy house before spreading to other houses. None of the families that were affected could save anything from their houses.

Charnell Southgate, vice-chairperson of the Maitland Garden Residents’ Association, says: “It was really a sad sight to see these children in tears after the fire. The entire community helped extinguish the fire with hoses and buckets of water but could not save anything. The families that were affected lost everything and there are so many small kids that will not enjoy their Christmas because of what happened,” she says.

The Association has helped the affected families with food parcels and groceries, but they still need more.

“I am reaching out for any donations of food, clothing, bedding, furniture or material such as boards, so that we help the affected families.”

Liezl Moodie of the City’s fire and rescue service confirms the incident: “Fire and rescue services responded to structures that were alight in Discovery Avenue on Wednesday 9 December at 09:44,” she says.

Those who want to help can call Southgate on 082 967 9766 or Cecelia Fouchee on 083 454 2518
