27 clubs in cubs cup

2017-09-12 06:00

In only a few weeks’ time, 27 local clubs will participate in a junior competition aimed at promoting soccer among children under the age of 10.

Hosted by the Mitchell’s Plain Local Football Association (MPLFA), with assistance from Westridge, Strandfontein, Bayview and Milano clubs, the two-day tournament will feature nine teams in the u.6 age group, 32 teams in the u.8 age group and 32 in the u.10 age group.

The clubs from all over Mitchell’s Plain are associated with the MPLFA. Some of the clubs have multiple teams participating.

“This is our third event and it is growing every year. We hope to make it one of the biggest tournaments of its kind in the Western Cape,” says Wayne Carstens, MPLFA president.

Some of the sponsors include 7Stars, Battery Centre, Remax, the social development department, City of Cape Town and the Strandfontein MFMC.

People’s Post is the official media partner of the event.

The tournament will take place at the Strandfontein sports field on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 September.

A cover charge of R5 for juniors and R10 for adults will apply on both days.

The event will also offer a day of fun for families to also see some of the cutest soccer players in action.

“Our cubs are a non-competitive participatory league. This is where our clubs work to involve children in sport at an early age – from five – and ingrain the values of team, discipline and physical and mental health,” says Carstens.

Kick-off on both days is at 09:00 and the action will be accompanied by live entertainment by YoungstaCPT and other local acts.
