43 arrested for drug crimes

Manenberg police have arrested 43 people in connection with drug-related crimes during the period from Friday 22 to Friday 29 April.

According to Lieutenant Ian Bennett, spokesperson of Manenberg Police Station, the week’s integrated operation were focused on gang violence and intelligence to disrupt gang activity.

Along with the City of Cape Town’s stabilisation unit, Bennett confirms that forces were deployed within the Manenberg precinct to saturate the area, creating high visibility to combat gang violence to ensure the safety of the community in Manenberg.

“Hotspots were raided and all crime generators were the focus of the member’s deployment, increasing stop and searches, vehicle check points, making sure that Manenberg residential area was under a fine-toothed comb,” states Bennett.

In total 80 units of heroine, 152 units of tik, 38.5 mandrax tablets as well as 1894g of dagga were confiscated and handed in to be sent for forensic testing.

Meanwhile, two men, both aged 22, were shot at last Wednesday at 19:45 while standing at an address in Humber Street and were wounded in the legs and chin. The suspect fled the scene on foot.

A short while later, a 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the murder of a 27-year-old man that was gunned down in Jordan Street while standing with friends earlier in the day. He was hit in the chest and hip.

A man was also arrested for the possession of a firearm, while two people were arrested for attempted murder.

“The success of this operation was information received by community that was followed up and the increase in visibility has also lead to the area being quiet. Colonel Hendrie Hugo has commended all officers that were involved in the operation for being vigilant and committed in ensuring the safety of the community of Manenberg. He is committed in ensuring that the high visibility will be maintained and encouraged the community to continue to report crime and any incidents of crime,” states Bennett.
