600 arrests in a week

Police arrested almost 600 suspects in a week-long operation recently.

Police arrested 567 suspects between Friday 12 and Friday 19 February for various crimes, including the possession of illegal firearms, ammunition and drugs.

In one case officers of the tactical response team received a tip-off that a firearm was being kept at a house in Andes Street, Tafelsig. The officers searched the house and found five rounds of live ammunition hidden inside the house. A 38-year-old man was arrested.

Another arrest also started in Andes Street, when Mitchell’s Plain police noticed a suspicious-looking man walking in the street. He ran away when he spotted the police and they gave chase.

The 38-year-old man was arrested in Katberg Street while hiding in the yard of one of the houses. He had a Baby Brown pistol with the serial number filed off.

Police also executed 16 operations focusing on wanted suspects which led to the arrest of 77 suspects.

Almost one hundred houses were searched for drugs, during which 226 people were arrested. Drugs confiscated include 116 units of heroin, 719 packets of tik, 356 mandrax tablets and 539g dagga.
