A hot stepper

A young man from Seawinds is dancing his way to success.

And to add to his string of successes, the 21-year-old is now set to compete as a pop and lock champion representing South Africa in San Diego, California.

The humble Densley Carolissen, also known as Lyrical Deezy, says his journey as a hip hop dancer started while he was at primary school.

“I always had a passion for dance and would get the love for it from watching a lot of dance movies. I would go outside then I would battle my friends in the streets, like they would do in those movies,” he says.

He has always had dreams of going overseas and for Lyrical Deezy this dream was made a reality when he started competing professionally at the age of 17. “In the first competition I entered – the national hip hop championships – I managed to get a silver medal. This was a breakthrough for me because from there on out I would go overseas for many competitions in the dance industry,” he says.

He adds he competed in the African Hip Hop Indaba, a local hip hop competition, and won the competition for two consecutive years.

Lyrical Deezy says he competed in professional dance competitions since 2011.

“I always compete in local talent shows as well. But my most recent success is definitely a great achievement for me and my community,” he says.

As part of an initiative, Lyrical Deezy has also decided to plough his skills back into the community by offering after-school hip hop classes at Floreat Primary.

“We have daily hip hop classes for the pupils at the school and this is just an activity to keep the children off the streets. I love working with the pupils because they enjoy the classes so much,” he explains.

He says it gives him great pleasure to add positively to the lives of children in the area and to be a part of creating a safe haven for them.

“The reality of children in our areas is that some of them grow up with either single parents or they don’t have parents at all and live with guardians. I have grown a bond with many of them and it is gratifying to know they appreciate that time is taken out to spend with them. Even when I miss a day of practise with them, they will come to me the next day and want to know where I was,” he laughs.

Lyrical Deezy will be flying to San Diego at the end of July ahead of the competition in August.

“I will be hosting fundraisers in the lead-up to the competition because in this competition we unfortunately have to pay our own airfare and accommodation. But that’s all I’m focussed on as pocket money isn’t really a must,” he says.
