Many may recognise her smooth voice from the Delft Big Band, but Adelia Douw is fast becoming one of Cape Town’s top vocal acts in her own right.

“Music is all I live for and being able to do it as a full-time job is a dream come true,” she says.

Adelia has been invited to perform at venues like the Crypt Jazz Restaurant and the Winchester Mansions and on Saturday 21 November she’ll be joining other rising stars as they perform with Arno Carstens and the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra at the Nederburg Picnic Pops concert.

She says she’s very excited to have been given the opportunity to perform with a full orchestra and is practising hard for the show.

“Fans can expect to have fun, smile and enjoy the performance with us.”

While she is still a part of the Delft Big Band line-up, Adelia is often involved with other musical projects. Last year she even sang the lead in Evita at the Bellville Civic Theatre.

Some of her highlights include performing in the Our Legends Passing the Baton concert at Artscape in August, performing at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, touring France and winning GrandWest’s open mic jazz competition last month.

“The experience was mind-blowing.”

Being part of the competition was already a dream come true for Adelia, so she wasn’t expecting to win it at all.

“The amazing talent in the competition, the musicians, the friends I made and all the love I received from all the supporters were heart-warming.”

She says winning the contest was a “step closer” to achieving her dreams of becoming a world-class musician.

The annual Nederburg Picnic Pops benefit concert aims to showcase young and emerging musicians on a platform where they get the opportunity to share the stage with more recognised names.

Adelia feels it’s important for established artists to empower younger musicians by sharing their knowledge and experience with the next generation.

“This industry is a very difficult industry and to survive in it you need to be smart. You need to have the talent and know the business side of things.”

She’ll be working on building her brand, to bring herself a step closer to being an established musician by getting her solo career off the ground.

Adelia will share the Nederberg Picnic Pops stage with award-winning soprano Goitsemang Lehobye, tenor Lukhanyo Moyake and choristers of the Boland Community Choir. They will be accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra under the baton of Brandon Phillips.

The concert starts at 18:00 but gates open at 16:00 and families are encouraged to bring snacks and enjoy the afternoon sun. V Tickets cost R100 each from and children under 12 enter free.
