Annual Birdathon a flying success

2015-05-05 06:00

Residents in the vicinity of the False Bay Nature Reserve (FNBR) enjoyed a day out for the annual Birdathon hosted at Zeekoevlei on Saturday 28 March.

The City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management Department and its partners invited all residents, especially the communities surrounding the False Bay Nature Reserve (FBNR), to enjoy a family day outdoors, celebrating some of the city’s best wetlands and diverse birdlife. The day was celebrated with a fun walk and various activities on the vlei, including dragon boating for the children.

The City’s myoral committee member for energy, environmental and spatial planning, Johan van der Merwe says the FNBR is a multi-purpose open space which can be enjoyed by families and friends across the city.

“Through this event the City and its partners hope to encourage greater use of the area and to create awareness about the importance of this park and the birds, animals and plants that it support, as well as the role this space plays in contributing to a sustainable environment,” explains Van der Merwe
