Life is really too short to have to wait to get information or be able to talk to your neighbours.

This is what the developer of the OurHood app, Bruce Good, believes. OurHood was founded by Good and Will Mellor, who are based in Woodstock.

This state-of-the-art application and website help residents to connect with their neighbours immediately, in real time.

The idea behind this was to get people involved with their neighbours and give them the ability to communicate in a faster way. He says the app makes it easy to get help quickly – be it if your dog has gone missing or you just want to borrow a ladder or to find out the load shedding schedule.

Good says it will help neighbours share information to help improve their neighbourhoods and make them safe.

“Our aim was to fight crime. This will allow for safer neighbourhoods as people can get assistance in the blink of an eye, as they are able to communicate in real time. This will allow them to share things and get to know their neighbourhood and their neighbours because the more people talk they will be closer to each other,” he says.

The app has a very strict verification process for registration. This will allow people in the neighbourhoods to connect much easier and not allow people who don’t belong in the same neighbourhood.

Instead of posting a notice in a shopping mall, this new app gives space for it and also has a section for important numbers.

People can report crime, neighbours can buy and sell items and share events.

“Everything is just one click away. We are also promoting the spirit of sharing. If you want to go camping but don’t have a camping mattress and someone in the area has it, you can just post on there and someone will help you quickly. The whole idea is to connect neighbourhoods and promote safer communities. When people interact they will be safer communities,” says Good.

Since the app was launched last year more than 800 neighbourhoods have started using it.

“People like it because they can reach each other cheaply and quickly. People are so amazed by it and it has unlocked new possibilities that they didn’t know about their neighbourhoods,” he says.

Adrian Good, ADT general manager, fully supports the OurHood app and is excited to be part of it. “We decided to get behind this initiative because we recognise the value in real time connection. In this day and age it’s crucial that we know and trust the people we see daily. Having a platform that allows for constructive communication while promoting a safe and secure neighbourhood is advantageous to all,” says Good.

The app is free and can be downloaded at, on the Apple store or Google Play store
