Arrest for possession of fake gun

A suspect was arrested on charges of the possession of an imitation firearm after he was apprehended on Tuesday 18 August.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says two members of the crime prevention unit saw two men on Strandfontein Road. “The men were standing on the grass between the two lanes. One officer saw how the one suspect took out a firearm and pointed it to two people on the opposite side of the road. The officers then drove towards the two suspects and when they saw the police they started to run,” Kleinsmith says.

She adds a pursuit between the two officers and suspects then ensued. “One officer caught up with the one suspect who threw the firearm away. Upon securing the suspect, the member discovered it was an imitation firearm. The second suspect got away,” she confirms.

A 19-year-old man was arrested and Kleinsmith confirms the suspect is affiliated to the 6Bop of Lotus River.

In another incident police arrested a 28-year-old suspect in Dieman Road after the suspect dropped a bag and started running when spotting the police vehicle.

Kleinsmith says the suspect was apprehended on Thursday while police members were conducting patrols in the area. “Officers chased the man and eventually caught up with him. They then took the suspect back to where he dropped the bag in which police members found a gate remote inside,” Kleinsmith says. “At the same time a resident in Daniel Avenue, Grassy Park realised that his gate remote was stolen and approached the police members and it was confirmed that it indeed belonged to the resident,” she adds.

The suspect was arrested on charges of possession of stolen goods and the complainant laid a charge of theft for his gate remote.
