Attitude drives road accidents

2015-05-26 06:00

I cannot understand how people still drive recklessly, still speed and still drink and drive even though they see or read how many persons are arrested for last-mentioned.

The carnage on the roads still carries on unabated even if the law enforcement agencies announce they will be executing roadblocks or checkpoints.

The reason for this non-compliance to the rules of the road or safe driving is attitude. Attitude is defined as “A position of the body or manner of carrying oneself, indicative of a mood or condition”. Let’s go one step further – with attitude is another lane called arrogance: “Excessively convinced of one’s own self importance”.

These two conditions put the foot hard on the petrol pedal. I have personally seen how others, and sorry to say myself too, experienced another vehicle just driving too slowly for our liking or turning without using an indicator in front of us, then arrogance and attitude make us become aggressive. Then the foot is plunged hard on the pedal to exact road-rage revenge.

The type of vehicle one drives also triggers attitude and arrogance for some law-abiding citizens and then the vehicle of status or stature becomes an Arabian stallion ridden by a take-no-prisoner gladiator.

The music and the sound volume play another role in the attitude and arrogant mannerisms of the normally passive driver and here I speak of myself once again. I have discovered that when I play passive music I drive normally and my foot is light on the petrol. But let me put on a catchy song, then I feel so hyped up that I develop an attitude within moments and that attitude and arrogance is suddenly reflected in my way of driving. If it affects me then what about other drivers?

Let’s not forget the driver with the pimp-my-ride vehicle, the super souped up vehicle – once the key is turned the peacock attitude kicks in and when the pedal paddling is enhanced the arrogant, untrained racing driver makes the road his racing track with no regard or respect for other road users or residents residing along the trail blazed.

Lastly, the one for the road, that one is normally way and above the legal limit and then the attitude is those famous words “I can drive my car”. That arrogant nature makes you the most dangerous potential killer on the highways and byways.

The above is a summary of the main causes of death and destruction of life and property on our roads. I want our minister of transport and all those involved in traffic management to get an attitude and also become arrogant by reducing the speed limit as speed kills.

I requesting the courts to increase the penalties of those found guilty. We need to see those fines in our media and social networks on a monthly basis.

This strategy will put the brakes on attitudes and arrogance of all road users
