You now have a place to exercise with like-minded women of all ages.

The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department launched the Lentegeur Walking and Aerobics Club on Saturday 15 August at the Lentegeur Civic Centre.

The club is focuses mainly on women of all age groups living all over Mitchells Plain.

The club based at the Lentegeur Civic Centre hosts classes everyday at various times. On Monday morning between 11:00 and 12:30, Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 19:00 and 21:00, Wednesday morning between 08:30 and 09:30 and Friday morning between 08:30 and 09:30.

Currently, only aerobics and dance classes are taking place at the Civic Centre until the weather conditions become more favourable for walking.

Classes are free with the Walking Club held on Friday mornings.

The Classes are held and arranged a volunteer from the Lentegeur Family Health and Fitness Community Organisation.

Classes are not compulsory and are open to the women to attend as often as they like.

According to district management, the programme has resulted in some relief for patients with cronic medication, as they have been taking less since being part of the club and classes.

The enjoyment of the class is also what they hope will keep the women comming back and add referals.

The City regards sport and recreation as an important tool – contributing not only to youth development, but also to the development of communities and the fostering of social cohesion says the City’s mayoral committee member for community services and special projects Belinda Walker.

“These programmes are used as a tool that can be utilised in the process to rebuild communities and bring about fundamental and sustainable change,” says Walker.
