Boy killed by Zip gun

Police are still investigating the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy who was shot and killed in Tafelsig last week.

According to police spokesperson Constable Zandile Marashula, police were called to the scene of a shooting in Sugarloaf Street on Sunday last week at 13:30.

On the police’s arrival at the scene, they discovered that a 12-year-old boy had been shot.

However the boy was not there as a family member had taken him to hospital after the incident in the yard.

Lieutenant Ian Williams, another police spokesperson for the station, confirms this.

“Police found the boy at the hospital after he had been taken there by the family. The incident happened in the yard between the wendy houses,” he says.

It is alleged that the boy and friends were playing with a home-made Zip gun.

Williams says the gun did not belong to the boys or their families. It was found in a field near their house.

“The children found the gun and took it home and played with it. That was when the shot went off,” he says.

The boy sustained a bullet wound to the head and was treated in hospital where he later died.

A murder docket has been opened and is currently under investigation.

“At this stage the investigation is still ongoing,” says Marashula.

“No arrest has yet been made.”

Because of the nature of the incident – as it involves minors – the case docket has been referred to the Senior Public Prosecutor. At the time of going to print no decision had yet been made.

Residents with any information are urged to come forward with any additional information.
