Retreat Funeral Society celebrates its centenary this year.

The society was established in 1915 to help the parishioners of Zwaanswyk Dutch Reformed Church in Retreat with funeral costs.

It was determined by the constitution that the church’s minister always had to be the chairperson.

Headed by the minister, the society membership increased in numbers.

Lou Pierce, secretary of the society, says in later years the constitution was amended to relieve the duties of the minister. A committee was elected by the members of the society.

The society currently has about 300 members.

It is still managed as a non-profit organisation and strives to give the best service at an affordable price.

The society will hold its annual meeting on at 86 Bergsig Garden Village in Springfontein Road, Amanda Glen in Durbanville Saturday 21 November at 15:00.

For more information contact Lou Pierce on 021 976 0065, 082 707 1504 or retreatbegrafnisvereniging@gmail.com.
