City hosts holiday programmes for kids

2015-06-23 06:00

Solar system scavenger hunts, indoor sports and a myriad of recreational activities will keep the winter blues away during the school holidays.

Parents need not worry as the City’s library and information services department and the sport, recreation and amenities (SRA) department will host a range of activities at many of the City’s community facilities during the winter school holidays.

Between the two departments, provision has been made to ensure that pupils will have more than 1000 holiday programmes to choose from. They will run daily from Monday 29 June to Friday 17 July.

The programmes will be presented at the City’s various libraries, community centres, sports fields and parks.

Each of the four districts within the SRA department will use the services of volunteers to ensure that the programmes are implemented effectively.

“Our goal with these programmes is to encourage children from communities throughout the city to participate in sport, recreation and special events during the holiday period. Our hope is that such participation and enjoyment will be the catalyst for a long-term interest in physical and recreational activities,” says Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member for community services and special projects.

Indoor programmes include boardgames, gymnastics, rope-skipping, karate, pool, poetry and drama, concerts, indigenous games, cultural dances, fitness training, talent shows and arts and crafts.

Outdoor programmes include five-a-side soccer, mini-netball, basketball, cricket, hockey, learn-to-swim programmes, kayaking, canoeing, angling, BMX, excursions, big walks, fun runs, jumping castles, face-painting, trampolines, touch rugby and various recreational activities and family fun festivals.

Residents can visit the City’s library and information services website for the detailed list of planned activities and their local library contact and location details at
