City to seal deal on Sevens

2015-10-27 06:00

The City of Cape Town’s council will consider a recommendation made by its mayoral committee to host the HSBC World Sevens Series at the Cape Town Stadium.

Tickets for the event are already on sale, with the final day of the two-day event already sold out, but the City and the South African Rugby Union (Saru) were yet to iron out the final details for the December event.

The mayoral committee has recommended that the council note the cash donation made by the Western Cape government to Saru as well as to note their waivering of all costs related to their emergency medical services.

It was also recommended that council consider waiving the stadium costs.

The City has also been asked to open the fan walk as part of the transport plan for the two days.

“I look forward to a positive outcome in the final approval process by council.

“This is a popular rugby series and the City of Cape Town is proud to be chosen as the host city to help elevate the status of the series. We anticipate that the event will attract a huge contingent of international media which will further help to promote the status of Cape Town as an events destination of choice,” said Garreth Bloor, mayoral committee member for tourism, events and economic development.

The South African leg of the World Sevens Series takes place on 12 and 13 December.
