Council cleans sewerin Pinelands

2015-05-05 06:00

A sewerage pipe which collapsed in Pinelands is receiving urgent attention by City of Cape Town contractors.

Ernest Sonnenberg, mayco member for utility services, says workers are digging to unblock the sewer next to Jan Smuts Drive in Pinelands.

“A cleaning team has been deployed to wash and disinfect the roads and private properties affected by the surface flow of sewage,” he says.

Sonnenberg says the City knows its older sewerage system is strained and, as such, the 64-year-old Northern Areas sewer has been receiving attention since May 2013. The section that collapsed was earmarked to be rehabilitated soon.

He says that the construction schedule going forward has not been affected and once completed, the new sewer will decrease the risk of sewage overflows caused by structural failure of the sewerage pipe or from lack of sewerage capacity
