Play equipment that is accessible for disabled children is being rolled out across the promenade.

This as the Milton play park has already been equipped with new play equipment which all has an element to make them suitable for disabled children.

The structures have different features that are custom-made to be used by disabled children without them needing to access the slides and staircases that are attached to standard play structures, explains Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member for community services and special projects.

The new play equipment has proven to be very popular, Walker says, and provision will be made for more disability-friendly play equipment at parks, Walker says.

“This is not the first park with disability-friendly play equipment – Thibault Park in Brackenfell also has disability-friendly play equipment installed,” Walker says.

“The City will continue to make provision for such equipment as and when funding becomes available and where there is noticeable interest. Residents wishing to have such play equipment installed in their community parks are welcome to contact their local ward councillor for these requests to be taken into account,” she says.

The multimillion rand upgrade to the promenade has seen the walkway repaved and the landscaping of play areas improved. The upgrade has been completed between the Pavilion and Milton Road, including improvements to sections in Mouille Point. Work is scheduled to continue along the rest of the promenade.

Following upgrades at the Mouille Point play park, the ground under the play equipment has also been replaced with special bricks made of soft rubber which gives way under impact to reduce injury
