Dumping dilemma

2015-06-09 06:00

Dirt and debris litter different areas in ward 46, which has ignited complaints by residents to have the dirt removed.

Residents of the ward, which includes parts of Manenberg, Newfields, Pinati and Penlyn Estates, say they are happy that a waste drop-off facility will soon be seen in the area.

One resident who requested to remain anonymous says she is happy the drop-off facility is coming to the area but she has her doubts about it too.

“Who says these people will make use of the facility once it’s here? These culprits don’t care where they leave their rubbish and don’t know how to dispose of it properly,” she says.

The woman, who is a Hanover Park resident, says the site where the facility will be is near a scrapyard on Turfhall Road.

“The people who bring their goods to the scrapyard clean their stuff in the road. The mess is then left there for days and is a real eyesore. Hopefully this will be a thing of the past,” she adds.

Ward councillor Junade Hoosain says during site visits in his ward he noticed various instances of dumping.

He says residents in the area are to blame for the dumping issues.

“Homeowners are getting others to go and dump their waste on the open fields and allowing them to use their wheelie bins to cart the debris in. This happens all over the metro,” Hoosain says.

He has encouraged residents to report any dumping in the area.

“The City of Cape Town can only act if someone reports it. They can provide us with a registration number, the date and time and where it occurred,” he adds.

Hoosain says he encourages people to report dumping instances so that law enforcement may serve summons to the perpetrators.V
